Enhance Your Website's Effectiveness: Low-, even No-Cost Options

Thursday, March 23, 2017

They say it takes 10 seconds (maybe even less) to lose a potential client's interest, and maintaining it is even more critical in the 21st-century...there's so much more online competition. Baltimore-area based, worldwide health writer/marketing consultant (and EFA member) Wendy Meyeroff was one of the first called to work on websites in the 90s, like the AMA's, Janssen Pharmaceutica, and Kidshealth.org. (More recently Sears and NIH.) In April, she's teaching the 90-minute EFA class on this topic, but come tonight and get a short intro.

We'll start at 6:45 pm, at the Howard County Library Savage Branch & STEM Education Center, 9525 Durness Lane, Laurel, MD 20723, 410.313.0760. We'll be in the Einstein Room. Feel free to bring your dinner with you (no microwave there), or just a drink. There's a water filler if you want to bring a water bottle.

RSVP to chap_maryland AT the-efa.org.

We'll be in the Einstein Room.

Bring your Scrabble boards, your Perquacky dice, your Quiddler cards, or any other word game you like, along with a potluck dish to share. Things you can bring include main dishes, sides, appetizers, desserts, drinks, and paper goods. We'll have a sink, as well as electrical outlets if you're bringing a crockpot or electric pot (for things you already cooked at home), but no kitchen access. Please bring appropriate serving pieces, and electric and/or extension cords, for your dish!

RSVP to chap_maryland AT the-efa.org, along with what food stuffs you're bringing to share.

Rant, Rail, or Revile: An evening of problem solving

Wednesday, April 27, 2016

Join us on Wednesday, April 27 at 6:30 pm in the Einstein Room, Savage Branch of the Howard County Library (9525 Durness Lane, Laurel, MD 20723, 410-313-0760), for an informal evening with your colleagues.

Most of us work at home and do not have the benefit of face-to-face interaction with colleagues who can help us out when we have a problem. Yes, various professional discussion lists (like the EFA List) help a great deal for this, but nothing can really replace asking a question or posing a problem to real-life people and getting immediate responses. Bring your problems and your thorny situations, both past and present, to air out and hopefully solve or fix. Also bring your expertise to help your fellow editors deal with these situations. Our chapter coordinator, Elaine Firestone, will moderate the lively discussion.

We will also want your ideas for future meeting topics.

Bring your dinner, or eat at home, but please join us.

Growing Your Client Base with Self-publishing Authors

Wednesday, March 16, 2016

Bring your dinner, or eat at home, but join us on Wednesday, March 16 at 6:30 pm in the Einstein Room, Savage Branch of the Howard County Library (9525 Durness Lane, Laurel, MD 20723, 410-313-0760), when our own Katherine Pickett will discuss how the growth of self-publishing presents freelance editors with valuable, untapped opportunities. Although many editors have worked with individuals, the needs of self-publishers are different. Savvy editors who anticipate those needs will ensure work for a lifetime. In this presentation we will discuss:

-Finding self-publishing clients -Estimating project time and cost -Pinpointing areas of job growth -Building and maintaining healthy client relationships

Attendees will leave knowing how to avoid the pitfalls and find success when working with self-publishers.

-Note that this will be a joint meeting with the Montgomery County chapter of the MidAtlantic Book Publishers Association (MBPA), so remember to bring your business cards!

Katherine Pickett is the owner of POP Editorial Services, LLC , and author of the award-winning book Perfect Bound: How to Navigate the Book Publishing Process Like a Pro. Beginning in 1999, she worked as a production editor with McGraw-Hill Professional for 5 years and Elsevier Inc. for 2 years before starting POP in 2006. Through POP she offers copyediting, proofreading, and developmental editing to authors and publishers across the country. In addition to working with self-publishers, in 2014 she self-published her own book and earned two Book of the Year awards. She is an active member of the Editorial Freelancers Association and is president of the Montgomery County chapter of the Maryland Writers Association. She has been educating writers and indie publishers about the book-publishing industry since 2010.
