Digital Printing

Area freelancers and consultants are invited to a session on digital printing, postponed due to inclement weather from December. Eric Wilska of The Bookloft, the independent bookstore in Great Barrington, MA, will speak about digital printing (electronic publishing) and how it will affect writers, editors, booksellers, and publishers. Along with Susan Novotny of The Bookhouse of Stuyvesant Plaza, Albany, Mr. Wilska started The Troy Book Makers, the first print-on-demand service in the region.
The East Greenbush Community Library is located off Exit 9 of Interstate 90. Coming from the WEST, at the exit turn right onto Route 4, then left on Route 151 (Luther Rd.) and go .4 mile. Turn right onto Michael Road, and the library is on the right. Coming from the EAST take I-90 W to Exit 9. At the end of the exit turn left onto Route 4 South. At first light turn left onto Route 151 East (Luther Rd). Turn right onto Michael Rd. Library will be on your right.

Bill Westwood is a full-time medical illustrator in Albany and has spoken frequejtly on the issues of artists’ rights/copyright, marketing, and pricing. Both are regular participants in "The Copyright Forum," WAMC/NPR’s Vox-Pop biweekly call-in program. There will be an opportunity for freelancers to share experiences with copyright issues.

Financial Planner Gives Tips for Self-Employed

Financial planner Kathleen Godfrey will speak about financial planning for the self-employed at the January 31, 2006, meeting of the Capital Region (NY) chapter of the Editorial Freelancers Association. Owner of an independent financial planning firm for 11 years, Ms. Godfrey will provide tax and retirement planning tips for those who work as freelancers part-time or full-time. There will be time for questions and discussion. Light refreshments will be provided.
Organizational Meeting

About 20 persons attended the Oct. 18 organizational meeting arranged by Richard Chady, Rebecca McBride, and Lara Stelmaszyk. There was a good cross-section of writers, editors and indexers. Participants ranged from those curious about freelancing and the EFA to a few long-time members. After each participant described his or her experience, interests and expectations, there were these developments: Dan Kittay of Kittay New Media volunteered to start a listserv so that we can keep in touch and discuss items of mutual interest. There was general support for having programs on practical skills, such as copy editing and computer skills. Dick, Rebecca and Lara will put together the next program, set January 31st.
