Inaugural Meeting

Saturday, March 31, 2007

In attendance at the inaugural meeting were Mary Lois Sanders, Joy Jones, and Amy Mayer. A working plan for the chapter was outlined. It will meet quarterly in March, May, August, and October, on Saturdays unless otherwise arranged. Topics and programs will include a workshop series: newsletter editing, what publishers want, writers' expectations. Other possible subjects are dealing with clients (contracts, agreements, and proposals), fees (hourly versus job rates), billing and deposits, networking, resources (software, including Quark and InDesign), and book editing.

The group agreed that community service seemed a great idea for sharing what chapter members know. One suggestion was to sponsor a "How to Write a Memoir" seminar, or to conduct oral history interviews to record stories for posterity's sake. Another idea was to offer a package of the editorial services to designated nonprofit groups that might benefit from the chapter's collective talents.

Several assignments for upcoming meetings were determined and accepted. Amy Mayer will find a permanent location. Joy Jones will research speakers from local publishing companies on the topic of what publishers want. Mary Lois Sanders will undertake both finding writers to speak on writer expectations and organizing the newsletter editing session.
