Making Your Job Indispensable: Tales from Four "Survivors"

How can you keep from being downsized? Attendants learned how today's b-to-b editors are going beyond magazine editing to manage a multimedia platform; how enterprising freelance editors and writers are enhancing their multimedia skills; how b-to-b editors can manage their time more efficiently using quantitative analysis; and how publishers can develop in-house training programs for a Web 2.0 world.
Panelists included Sam Friedman, editor-in-chief of Highline Media's National Underwriter magazine; Bill Keenan, a freelance editor of three monthly newsletters: The Customer Communicator, Customer Service Newsletter, and Sales Rep's Advisor; Howard S. Rauch, president of Editorial Solutions, Inc., which focuses on business magazine publishers; and Tom Sawyer, a senior editor at Engineering News-Record, a national online news source and weekly print magazine for the construction industry.

EFA member Michael Dahlie gave a brief reading and talk about his novel A Gentleman's Guide to Graceful Living (W.W. Norton, June 2008). Afterwards, he discussed the practical matters of approaching agents, talking to editors, and sending work to journals. He also spoke about the strange distinctions between commerce and art, highbrow and lowbrow publishing, and the problem of keeping art and work separate.

Freelancers often run into the question, How much copyrighted material can I use? Under copyright law, courts apply a fair use test. Attorney Raymond Dowd, author of the Copyright Litigation Handbook, presented an overview of copyright law principles applicable to freelancers, together with visual, musical, and literary examples to show how courts apply the concept of fair use and how freelancers can approach these questions.

The annual holiday party, a longstanding EFA tradition and an occasion for celebrating the season with freelance colleagues and their families, was especially well attended this year. As always, it was a potluck buffet supper, and all brought a variety of crowd-pleasing dish—ready to serve—to the table. EFA provided wine and soft drinks. A good time was had by all.
