The EFA recently embarked on a number of changes to enhance and strengthen the member experience. We launched a new online community platform and restructured our staff to emphasize our focus on building and growing a dynamic member community.
Khiteriara Brown joined the EFA in late March as community manager, a new position on our staff created with a focus on rethinking the way we approach the member value proposition at the organization. We recently asked Khiteriara (or Khiteri for short) what she is enjoying most about being at the EFA so far and what she’s most looking forward to.
1. What excites you most about joining the EFA and leading our member community?
I’m most excited to support and celebrate the incredible creativity and talent of our members. There’s so much power in collective wisdom, and I’m energized by the opportunity to cultivate meaningful connections that make the EFA feel like a true home base for freelancers at every stage of their careers.
2. What’s a moment from your career that changed the way you think about community?
While building a coalition for an international advocacy campaign, I saw firsthand how people from entirely different geographies and backgrounds could unite around shared values when given the space to be seen and heard. That taught me that belonging isn’t about uniformity; it’s about intentional inclusion.
3. What’s a story from your life (big or small) that helps explain who you are today?
Growing up in a multicultural household, I learned early on how to listen deeply, translate across perspectives, and find common ground. That skill has shaped how I approach every space I enter—with curiosity, clarity, and care.
4. Do you have a favorite success story or proud moment from past community work?
I’m proud of growing a grassroots membership community from a few hundred to over 100,000 globally. That growth came by listening, responding to members’ needs, and staying rooted in purpose. Seeing members take ownership of the space and shape it as their own was the best reward.
5. What’s something you’re currently learning, unlearning, or exploring in your work or life?
I’m exploring how to build digital spaces that feel just as vibrant, welcoming, and human as in-person communities. It’s a constant learning curve, and also a great opportunity for innovation.
6. What does “belonging” look like to you in a professional community?
Belonging means you can show up as your full self, be respected for your contributions, and feel like your voice matters. That should be true whether you’ve been here for 10 years or 10 minutes.
7. What are you most curious about when you think of our members and their work?
I’m curious about the stories behind the work: what inspires our members, what motivates their craft, and how they navigate the freedom and challenges of freelance life. I want to learn how EFA can be a stronger support system for all of that.
8. How can members connect with you to share their ideas or say hello?
I’d love to hear from you! You can reach me at khiteriara.brown@the-efa.org or drop a message in the member portal. I’m always open to chatting about new ideas or just getting to know you better.
