Amy K. Guenther, PhD

Hi! I’m Dr. Amy K. Guenther, editor and writing coach for humanities and fine arts scholars and nonfiction writers. I provide copyediting and coaching for dissertations and theses, as well as coaching, developmental editing, copyediting, and line editing for journal articles and books. I have a PhD in performance studies from the University of Texas at Austin.

My goals in editing and coaching are 1) to help you learn the skills to become a better writer and 2) to help you find and maintain your voice as a writer. I strive to provide mindful and compassionate editing that honors the writing process as much as the product.

Because my PhD is in performance studies, an interdisciplinary field, I have a working knowledge of several disciplines. I have worked with writers in theatre studies, performance studies, dance studies, Asian studies, Black studies, queer studies, women’s studies, gender studies, film studies, media studies, and trans studies. Past clients have published books with presses such as Cambridge University Press, Rutgers University Press, and Routledge and dissertations for institutions such as Cornell University and the University of Texas at Austin.

I also have ample experience working with ESL and ELL (aka non-native English) writers, including writers from Nigeria, South Korea, and China.

Here is what one client reported:

“Dr. Guenther has been such a terrific copyeditor. I have been working with her on a couple of projects and I am always amazed by and thankful for her painstaking attention and close reading of manuscripts, not to mention her kindness, patience, and passion for the subjects. She will find even minor errors from grammar to structural incongruities. Her in-depth knowledge of humanities subjects is also something I highly appreciate. I strongly recommend Dr. Guenther for anyone preparing manuscripts or book projects in the arts and humanities, including non-native English-speaking scholars and graduate students.”
