Bob Kirsch

An experienced health and medicine writer, I have published more than a thousand articles on health and medicine in over forty-five publications, including The Lancet, Scientific American, The Washington Post, Mayo Clinic Health Letter, Oncology Times, Newspaper of Cardiology, Infectious Disease News, The Female Patient, Managed Care (magazine), Human Resource Executive, AARP Bulletin (online), Medscape (online). Am past president of the Metropolitan New York Chapter of the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA).

Additional publications I have written include newsletters, training materials, publications for healthcare executives, consumer publications, CME and CE, video scripts, hospital websites, slide presentations, interviews, a book for nurses on postpartum care, and a manual on a health program in Ghana.

As a line editor, developmental/substantive editor, and copy editor, I have worked on projects for hospitals, physicians, nurses completing Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) capstone projects, newspapers for physicians, pharmaceutical companies, researchers, and individual authors.

Previously worked as a general editor, copy editor, researcher, fact checker, and so am used to working on a range of material. Before that taught art history, publishing on Cézanne in Partisan Review, The New Criterion, The Burlington Magazine, and Gazette des Beaux-Arts; and on Rembrandt in Print Quarterly. For several years, have volunteered with people new to the English language (ESL).

Particular interests include clinical medicine, health disparities, and patient-physician interactions.

With a twenty-five year track record as a writer and editor, I bring you an array of capabilities, including:

  • Skills in writing for an array of distinct audiences, from physicians and allied professionals to professors to business leaders to families to children to patients to internet users to the general public
  • Careful to focus on helping the process run smoothly
  • Deep experience interviewing experts
  • Track record of ethical practice
  • Careful follow-up of all assignments
  • Exceptional record of completing work on time or ahead of schedule
  • Moderate charges

I do attempt to be facilitative. Not everyone finds writing to be easy or has time to rewrite, and I try to be helpful.

Comments from people I have worked for follow:

From a physician author: “Thanks very much for the EXCELLENT points you have raised. You have put your finger DIRECTLY on the pulse of what it is that I will be emphasizing in this book, namely.…”  and “This was VERY valuable feedback for me. It never OCCURRED to me to weigh and count the number of negative/warning-type words in the text, against the number of positive and encouraging type words.”

From a nurse whose Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) capstone project I edited: “Bob provided clarity and objectivity when helping me with the final version.  Bob’s editing was spot on and very thought provoking.  He asked questions throughout my paper on concepts that I assumed were clear to everyone. His turnaround time is second to none. I’ve submitted work to him on a Friday night and received a response the next day.  I’ve recommended Bob to several nurse colleagues as well.”

From the editor of a newspaper for physicians, upon his retirement: “Thank you for everything … your knowledge, work ethic, and sincere effort….I want to thank you for the outstanding contribution you have made to the success of the company the past dozen years. I also would like you to continue contributing.”

From a Pharm D, CMPP, scientific director: “I would be happy to recommend you to anyone.”
