Edward M. Levy

A professional editor for over thirty years, Ed has edited books for Doubleday, Random House, Princeton University Press, Macmillan, Paulist Press, Prentice-Hall, SUNY Press, Scholastic, Scholars Press, Praeger, Solution Tree Press, and many other publishers and private individuals. His projects have received publishing and professional awards. For over seventeen years, he worked in-house as a senior editor focusing on developmental and substantive editing.

With a strong academic background, including degrees from Brandeis and Columbia Universities, Ed has experience teaching at the secondary and college levels and is at home in the social sciences and humanities. He has edited a number of important works of scholarship. In the area of general nonfiction, he has worked in multiple genres, including biography, public affairs, and memoir. He has edited numerous works in the field of religion and spirituality, including books on Judaism, Christianity, Eastern and Western mysticism, yoga, Vedanta, Shaivism, and Taoism. Many authors who are non-native English speakers have turned to him to perfect their English written expression.

Authors, particularly first-time authors, often find the task of structuring their material daunting. Ed is skilled at creating a solid scaffold for a written work, placing the broad themes, topics, and subtopics in right relationship to each other.

His writing and political cartoons have appeared in magazines and newspapers.

Books he has edited have received the following awards:

Association of Academic Publishers Distinguished Achievement Award
Foreword Magazine’s Book of the Year
Independent Publishers Book Award
Learning Magazine’s Teacher’s Choice Award
V. O. Key Award of the Southern Political Science Association

“Many thanks for your fine work on this project. You did much to improve the writing, and the author has every reason to be grateful to you.”—Princeton University Press

“We would like to thank you for your excellent editing and the thoughtful comments and questions you had during the process, which helped us to clarify what we want to say. The volume reads now very well, thanks to you. Our experiences, thoughts and ideas are now easily accessible to readers and the volume is likely to have an impact because of your work. Thanks! We are very grateful to you.” – Martín Renzo Rosales, LaShaune P. Johnson, and Alexander Rödlach (Eds.), Research as Accompaniment: Solidarity and Community Partnerships for Transformative Action. Routledge.

“The manuscript is in great shape. Your turnaround is fantastic. I would like you to know that working with you has been amazing. You have incredible insight, and you are kind/gentle with your remarks. You have been a solid support beyond what I expected from an editor. Thank you.”—Jodie Eckleberry-Hunt, Ph.D., author of Cursing Your Way to Sanity.

“E. M. Levy, the editor, reshaped my less than adequate English, as well as the structure of the text, into a much higher standard. I also appreciated his emotional involvement in the book’s subject matter, which did not interfere with his uncompromising criticism when he felt the text did not express my intent clearly and precisely.” — Ivan Fuchs, MD, author of The Evolutionary Mechanisms of Human Dysfunctional Behavior (Radius Book Group)

“Ed’s review was spot-on! His knowledge of the subject area was deep and useful. He gave me excellent recommendations to fill in gaps and enhance marketability. Forcing me to review and make hard decisions for my book was more valuable than any syntax or comma fix he did (and he did those edits very well, too).” –Pat Edwards, author of  Exploring the Magic of Your Hero’s Journey

“I’m rushing to get this to the FedEx office but want to thank you for the wonderful editing job. The manuscript is very much improved!”—Prof. James Button, author of Blacks and Social Change

“I just want to take a moment for personal thanks to you, Ed, for your leadership through what I know was arduous work. I am bowled over by all the content that is in place, and I know that it couldn’t have happened without you. Through it all, you kept a sense of humor, and the results are simply spectacular. I am especially proud of the high-quality teamwork on this project, and I know that your attitude and approach were key to that.” — Carol MacMillan, senior vice president, Girl Scouts of the USA

“My editor, Ed Levy, was superb to work with.”—Sue Stephenson, author of Leading with Trust

“Thank you, Ed. We were so fortunate to have such a great editor!”—Margarita Calderón, Professor Emerita, Johns Hopkins University

“We would like to send our gratitude to you for your professionalism, attention to detail, and efficiency in the editing services you provided for The Perennial Truth project. . . Thank you again for your delicate editing techniques on the book without changing the message and voice of the author.”—International Academy of Spiritual Sciences, School of Samaya, Johannesburg, South Africa

“I am grateful for the hours and hours you spent making this a first-class piece of work. I needed the discipline you project on any work you take up, and I am grateful. You have set a gold standard that would be hard for many others to reach.” – Mary Kim Schreck, author of From Tired to Inspired: Fresh Strategies to Engage Students in Literacy, nominated for Foreword Magazine’s Book of the Year Award and winner of the Silver INDIEFAB Award for Education
