Preserving author’s voice is a priority in my editing work, second only to reader comprehension.
Manuscript evaluation/developmental editing/substantive editing of fiction are my realms.
Developmental editing helps authors fix soggy middles and makes the story clear. Most of my clients need this help in extending their fiction to traditional book lengths for their genres while keeping their readers engaged. Some line edits are invariably included. I use the Chicago Manual of Style (17th Edition) unless another style guide is required, and an unabridged Merriam-Webster dictionary.
As a former editor for Intermezzo magazine, with published articles in Chess Life and the online speculative fiction magazine, Endless Stars, I bring the the wisdom of those experiences to match my education at Boston College and subsequent writing/editing courses. I am also a published novelist, so I empathize with your difficulties.
