Evelyn M. Duffy

Open Boat Editing

“A singular talent. … a deft editor and researcher …a magician when creating order out of the chaos of huge book projects.”

– Stuart Roberts, senior editor at Simon & Schuster

I lead a team of accomplished editors, writers, and researchers at Open Boat Editing. We assist authors at every stage of the book process through developmental editing, book doctoring, ghostwriting, research, copy editing, web design, and other services.

I’ve been editing and writing in the DC area for over 14 years. I was an in-house editor, researcher, and transcriber for Bob Woodward from 2007 to 2020, and assisted with his six latest New York Times best-sellers from the beginning of the research process to publication. These books focused on the American presidency (covering Presidents Bush, Obama, Nixon, and Trump, respectively) and the surrounding issues of politics, defense policy, international relations, and economic policy.

“Your feedback is so detailed and thoughtful. Thank you for investing so much time into our book.”

– Michael O’Leary, co-author of Accountable

I have collaborated closely with journalists and other nonfiction authors on politics, history, military affairs, current events, student debt, science, creative nonfiction, and business projects. I also provide book coaching and book proposal development for nonfiction clients.

“I cannot recommend working with her strongly enough. Evelyn is amazing.”

Rob Blackwell, author of The Pretender and other novels

Through my freelance work at Open Boat Editing, I have done developmental editing for many self-published and indie authors, including award winners Rob Blackwell (author of the Sanheim Chronicles and the Soren Chase series) and Sonora Taylor (author of Please Give, The Crow’s Gift, and Without Condition). I particularly enjoy working with first-time authors, genre writers, LGBTQ authors, and local DC/VA/MD clients.

“I’ve hired Evelyn several times and the fact that I keep going back to her probably tells you something. Prompt, thorough, professional — all of the above.”

Bill Murphy, author of In a Time of War and The Intelligent Entrepreneur

I copy edit various public-facing materials for corporate clients in the banking, personal finance, and hospitality industries. I’m also available for writing, research assistance, and transcribing.

“Evelyn Duffy’s work is thorough and professional. Her comments on my manuscript proved that she was the perfect editor to work with. She met the deadline she promised and remains available to answer questions. I see no reason to search elsewhere for any future works!”

Judy Reveal, novelist and EFA Member

I’m a graduate of George Washington University in Washington D.C., where I majored in English and Creative Writing. One of the best life-long lessons I learned there was how to take joy in helping to improve already excellent work. The collaborative process between writer and editor is extremely rewarding. I know from my own writing experience how vital a trusted editor can be, and what a profound difference their work can have on the writing process.

“In all my contacts with Evelyn, I always felt that I was her most important client despite being a first-time author. The attention to detail that she rendered to my manuscript was amazing.”
