James Berg

I am a graduate of the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. I earned three degrees there in English Literature (BA, MA, PhD). I am an experienced editor of scholarly and general interest books.

My essay on coming out and the cost of being in the closet was published here:
https://www.salon.com/2023/06/03/geraldo-outed-me-on-national-television/

My work in progress includes novels and plays.

My professional career has been in public higher education, where I have taught and been an academic administrator for over twenty years. After nearly a decade in Southern California, I served for six years as Associate Dean of Faculty at Borough of Manhattan Community College (CUNY) and for three years as an adjunct instructor at Teachers College, Columbia University.

My scholarship has focused on literature of the 20th Century, broadly speaking, with a particular concentration on the work of Christopher Isherwood. I have spent two decades as an editor of academic and general-interest collections, including the following:

•   Isherwood in Transit. Co-edited and introduced with Chris Freeman. University of Minnesota Press, 2020.
•   Isherwood on Writing. Edited with an introduction. University of Minnesota Press, 2008 (paperback forthcoming 2022)
•   The Isherwood Century: Essays on the Life and Work of Christopher Isherwood.  Co-edited and introduced with Chris Freeman. University of Wisconsin Press, 2000. Winner Lambda Literary Award.
•   Love, West Hollywood. Co-edited and introduced with Chris Freeman. Alyson Publications. 2008.
