J T Johanna Halford-MacLeod

As writer, editor, translator, proofreader, and project manager, I’ve logged many years working on a wide range of non-fiction, including museum books, artist monographs, exhibition catalogues, educational materials for K-12 museum audiences, websites, bibliographies, and lifestyle magazines. Prior to freelancing, I spent over twenty years as director of publications at two museums (Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., and Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia, Pa.) and worked for couple of years as an interior design editor for Good Housekeeping magazine (UK edition). I can honestly say that I have dealt with every type of editing and every phase of publication: from editing to re-writing, from fact-checking to proofreading, blurb-writing and book promotion.

My graduate studies were in art history. Although my early career was spent in fashion and interior design journalism for a wide general readership, most of my editorial work has been in the fields of art and architecture, collectors and collecting, and modern history. My own published writing about art has been for general audiences. I am a proficient linguist–French, Italian, German–and I pride myself on the sensitivity of my translations.

I offer manuscript assessment, proposal writing, developmental and line editing, copyediting, and proofreading services, as well as project management.

I love language and the search for the right word. I believe in the importance of grammar and syntax, precision and punctuation. I take pride in making my authors look good.
