Kate Hartford

I help your work come alive, whether it’s through writing, coaching, developmental editing or copyediting, or basic website design. With 30 years in academia, nearly a decade in philanthropy, and seven years of freelancing, I have experience in writing and editing for academic, nonprofit and general audiences. I help others: hone their writing, design and write content for websites and blogs, shape material for public presentations (from speeches to PPT), compose grant proposals and funding appeals, and make internal communications more effective.

My degrees go all the way up to a Ph.D. in political science. My interests in writing and editing range more broadly: social justice and social movements, human rights, corporate social responsibility, history, current affairs, women’s studies, biography and memoir, Asian studies, Eastern and Central Europe, the Internet and information technology (IT) from social and business perspectives, globalization, international business, agriculture and rural development, urbanization, political economy of developing countries, natural history and sciences aimed at general audiences, mental health, and travel. I’m fluent in Chinese (putonghua, sometimes called Mandarin) and in French; speak some and read more in Spanish, Dutch, and Japanese; and can also read Cyrillic and Greek alphabets. In addition to expertise in MS Word, PPT and Excel, I have a certificate in advanced WordPress and experience tinkering in Photoshop. I’m comfortable working with numbers, and love shaping and editing graphs, charts and tables to support the writer’s message.

Over the years I have helped numerous researchers, activists, authors and students figure out what they really want to say and say it well, to reach and impress their intended audiences. Recent clients have included a self-published memoir author, the CEO of a small mental-health nonprofit, an IT professional in a large organization, a Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer, a scholar compiling a book of essays from other scholars and activists from five continents, and individual academics working on book proposals, editing books, or polishing their books before final submission to publishers.
