Marian Perales

I am an experienced editor with more than 16 years in reference and educational publishing. I have a diverse skill set including writing reference and curriculum content, editing, copyediting, and proofreading. In addition to those varied skills, I have worked as an acquisitions editor signing, developing, and editing nonfiction manuscripts for more than 10 years.

My tenure as an editor includes ten years in management where I supervised a team of editors, managed projects, and planned, developed, and executed new website/database products in U.S. History, American Indian Studies, Latino Studies, and African American Studies subject areas.  My project management skills include book manuscripts, website launches, and curriculum projects with both long and short-range goals.  I have worked on book manuscripts in such areas as primary historical sources, popular culture (sports, theater), U.S. history, the Americas, Latino Studies, and African American Studies.

In addition to work in reference publishing, I have written countless book reviews over the past two years. I have written book reviews in both long and short form for blogs and traditional media outlets.  I have reviewed books in literary fiction, memoir, nonfiction (history, education, current events) with special interests in books by and about BIPOC communities.  I am a member of the National Book Critics Circle.

I received my B.A., M.A. and completed Ph.D. coursework in U.S. History.  I received my undergraduate degree in history from California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo and my graduate degree and coursework in U.S. history at Claremont Graduate University where I specialized in 19th century, Chicanx history, and intellectual history.

I enjoy reading, cooking, travel, and hiking with my dog.
