Michelle Martin, Inc.

I have been a professor for the last 20 years in the social sciences, as well as a policy specialist. Prior to entering academia, I worked in direct practice as a clinical social worker. I have written three textbooks in the areas of social work, human services and social justice advocacy. I also write creative non-fiction in the genres of political/cultural affairs (immigration, social media) and self-help (women and aging, humor). With regard to editing, I have worked as a freelance editor (developmental and copyediting) for the last 10 years, for both individual clients and major publishers. I was the series editor and developmental editor for a project with Pearson Publishing on a series of e-texts in psychology, sociology, marriage and family, public policy, criminal justice, communications and public relations. This project included concept development, project development, content development/developmental editing, fact-checking, copyediting, and content expert: social media, culture, global conflict, immigration/refugee. I have also developed and edited academic articles, white papers, policy analyses, textbooks (hardcopy and e-books), dissertations, master’s theses, bibliographies, blogs, query letters and book proposals. I was a policy analyst and speech-writer for a foreign embassy in the U.S. for two years in relation to global conflict and diaspora relations. I have been a ghostwriter for several chapters and books (communications, psychology, marriage and family). I am an active blogger in the areas of politics and self-help. I have facilitated several writing workshops, both in person and online, focusing on academic and creative non-fiction writing. I have an MSW, an MS in public policy and a PhD in peace studies (international relations).  I have a high level of technological competency (social media, websites, anything Mac).
