Rachel Lynn Bishop

Hi, my name is Rachel Bishop. It’s very nice to meet you!

I am a freelance copy editor, line editor, developmental editor and proofreader, and have been in the business since 2017. I earned a professional certificate in editing from the Graham School at the University of Chicago in September 2017, and earned a BA in English linguistics with a minor in creative writing from Eastern Michigan University in 2015.

Currently, I’m an assistant editor for a graphic novel publisher in the greater Philadelphia area, and I am a copy editor for a B2B marketing company. I am an excellent editor and proofreader with a keen eye for detail, and my work experience includes comics books, press releases, showcase materials, newspapers, magazines, e-letters, newsletters and web content that covers a diverse range of topics, such as finance, health and medicine, marketing, travel, law, government and technology.

I have copy edited and proofread poetry and both fiction and nonfiction short stories, novels and travel books, including religious works, memoirs, science fiction and fantasy. I have also worked with graduate students in the medical field, helping them develop and edit research papers.

What all that boils down to is simple: I love all things language, reading and writing, and thankfully my education and experience has allowed me to indulge that love. My formal education in linguistics, where I focused on theoretical and applied morphology and syntax, has given me a deep understanding of how the mechanics of language work. My editing certificate took my scientific understanding of language and focused it on copy editing and line editing.

I am very familiar with the Chicago Manual of Style and AP style, and am quite comfortable with MLA, APA and AMA. I am extremely capable with Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook, and I am equally capable of making edits in PDFs or with traditional marks.  I have excellent time management, am extremely organized and excel at working under pressure and with close deadlines. What I don’t already know, I am eager and quick to learn.

I have other specialties that allow me to work on trade projects, as well. I have been a seamstress for over ten years, and I can work on sewing-specific projects due to my familiarity with the subject matter, processes and jargon. I have special experience with music, specifically piano, guitar and voice. I studied French for six years, and while I am not fluent and would not be able to do translations, I am familiar enough with the language that some small uses of it would not be a hindrance, and I would be able to catch mistakes in casual use. I am also very capable with any linguistic, language-science or literature projects, as I have studied in these particular fields for years.
