Riley Johnson

I specialize in both developmental editing and line editing; I also have extensive experience as a copyeditor and proofreader, working within both rigid and informal style guidelines. As such, the work I do can encompass everything from teasing out a narrative’s fundamental themes and structure to polishing a manuscript at the level of spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

My formal education is in fiction writing, but I also have a great deal of experience editing technical writing and narrative nonfiction. After graduating in 2014 from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where I was a Teaching-Writing Fellow, I worked for five years as a freelance copyeditor and as an adjunct professor of writing at the University of Iowa. In 2019 I began working full time as a print production associate for a small publishing company called Winsor Learning (based in Minneapolis, where I now live). I returned to full-time freelancing, however, when my spouse and I had a baby in October 2020.

I take a hands-on approach to language, and I enjoy taking sentences apart and putting them back together with the goal of helping a writer discover the most elegant version of their own distinctive style. I’m also keen to learn the unique stylistic requirements of specialized writing such as legal and scientific work. Whatever kind of writing you do, I’m looking forward to helping you along the road to publication!
