Skye Hughes
I am an editor/writer with more than 30 years of experience with a wide variety of industries and products. My editing skills range from basic copyediting and proofreading to substantive and developmental editing and making multiple-author papers read as if written by a single author.
I have written and edited technical and business text:
- social media and web content,
- company style guides,
- user manuals and help text,
- white papers and reviewer guides,
- news articles,
- press releases and other promotional material, and
- educational materials.
I have edited non-fiction:
- technical — scientific reports, technical and scientific articles, and complex technical articles; and
- soft — policies and procedures manuals, social and medical case studies, and teacher/student lesson guides.
I have edited and written fiction, both short form and long.
Favorite achievements: 1) I was recognized by a NOAA Fisheries Service division director for helping create the most understandable and readable biological status report in his division; 2) I mastered a newly developed software package and created the final documentation set within half the time allotted by the client, saving the client 50% in content development costs.
I am familiar with the Chicago Manual of Style and the AP Style Guide and can quickly become familiar with any style guide I’m provided. I am passionate about the Oxford comma and discuss it at length (or ad nauseam, say my friends). I have a strong technical background and an in-depth knowledge of Microsoft Word, and am adept with most Microsoft Office programs and have worked quite a bit with Adobe Illustrator and Acrobat. I have a strong creative background with education in English (writing emphasis), and classes and experience in art/design. I learn new things very quickly.
