Description

Copyediting fiction differs from copyediting nonfiction in the amount of leeway in correctness and style that is allowed, the need to maintain plot consistency by keeping track of various story elements, and the handling of dialogue and other elements not found in nonfiction. Flexibility is key! This webinar will cover some general approaches to copyediting fiction. Topics will include house style vs. author style/voice, appropriate level of “correctness,” genre considerations, plot consistency, advocating for the reader, dialogue, adult themes, anachronisms, balancing real and fictional elements, language and action bloopers, American vs. British style, trademarks, editing series, and diplomacy in editing and querying.

Instructor Amy J. Schneider of Featherschneider Editorial Services, a freelance copyeditor of textbooks, trade nonfiction, and best-selling fiction since 1995, has written articles and presented sessions on copyediting fiction for Copyediting.com, An American Editor, Communication Central, the Editorial Freelancers Association, and the American Copy Editors Society. When she’s not working in the soft glow of her four-monitor desktop, she enjoys running, singing, and teaching her springer spaniels to do silly tricks (not all at the same time).
