One of the classic questions for freelancing is whether to specialize in a narrow niche or generalize by offering either more than one editorial service or working in more than one topic or field. Whether you are a freelance writer, editor, proofreader, graphic designer, photographer, website developer or other editorial worker, both offer potential profits and potential limits. This session will present pros and cons—mostly pros—of both options to help colleagues make better choices about being a specialist or a generalist.

Presenter Ruth E. Thaler-Carter is about as general a generalist as a colleague can be: Her motto is “I can write about anything!”® and she provides writing, editing, proofreading, publication production, website, and marketing services to a wide range of clients.
