If you don’t already have a background with science fiction and fantasy, it’s challenging to know what to include in your developmental editing scope. It can be scary sending feedback if you aren’t sure your guidance is comprehensive enough on integral elements of speculative storytelling, such as magic systems, future tech, worldbuilding, and non-human characters.

In this two-day intensive, we’ll examine the specific types of feedback SF&F authors need in the following deliverables:

Developmental editing letters

Manuscript assessments

Coaching sessions

We’ll also experiment with spotting big-picture and worldbuilding issues in summaries and outlines to help you provide an array of assistance to your new SF&F clients.

For seasoned editors looking to expand into speculative fiction, you’ll get actionable feedback on how to evolve your existing processes to meet the needs of speculative fiction writers. If you’re a new editor with limited experience working with real-world clients, this class provides a range of example deliverables and allows you to explore how seasoned editors identify story issues related to speculative worldbuilding, create a framework for story improvements, and communicate effectively with clients in your deliverables.

We recommend newer editors take this intensive as a primer for the EFA’s eight-week course Editing Science Fiction and Fantasy, but it is also an excellent standalone learning opportunity for editors at any point in their career.
