  • Citation audit / fact-checking for a psychology-neuroscience trade manuscript

    âś… RATE-CHART CONSISTENT

    Description

Citation audit / fact-checking for a psychology-neuroscience trade nonfiction manuscript
I'm seeking an experienced academic copyeditor, citation auditor, or fact-checking researcher for a targeted citation audit of a psychology/neuroscience-informed trade nonfiction manuscript. Psychological content; academic/clinical discussion of mental illness, trauma, abuse dynamics, and sexual-behavior research; analytical register, not graphic depiction, but may be triggering.
The manuscript has approximately 72 unique sources. A prior audit has already identified specific citation problems — wrong journals, incorrect page ranges and volumes, a bad DOI, misattributed authors, an unresolved placeholder, and one possible claim-fit reversal. I need someone to independently verify the flagged items, correct the bibliographic data, check in-text/bibliography matching, resolve placeholders and unverifiable citations, and perform claim-fit checks on the high-use and problem citations. I also want a spot-check of a sample of the sources the prior audit marked clean, to confirm nothing was missed.

    Scope of work

Independently verify the flagged references (the prior audit lists about 12).
Independently spot-check a sample of entries the prior audit marked clean (I will designate which).
Correct and complete bibliographic data for entries as needed: authors, title, journal, volume/issue, pages, year, DOI/PMID.
Check in-text citation ↔ bibliography matching.
Resolve or recommend removal of placeholders and unverifiable or unpublished citations.
Perform claim-fit checks on high-use and flagged citations — does the cited source actually support the sentence/paragraph where it's used? Report your findings; do not rewrite manuscript text.

    Deliverables

A spreadsheet audit trail with one row per checked source: current entry, corrected entry, DOI/PMID/URL, problem type, action taken, and whether the source supports the manuscript claim (with a note where it does not).
The corrected reference data delivered as structured fields in that spreadsheet — not pre-formatted into a citation style. This is a trade book and the final style is undecided (likely Chicago notes or a curated notes section), so I want the verified data style-agnostic and will format it later.
Notes on any citation that is weak, mismatched, inaccessible, unpublished, or does not support the cited claim.

    Required experience

Academic references and citation verification (not just formatting); DOI/PMID verification; PubMed, Crossref, Google Scholar, library databases; Zotero or similar; psychology/neuroscience or medical/social-science manuscripts.
    Process

I'd like to begin with a paid sample of 10 citations that I will select before approving the full project.

Please answer these in your reply:

Have you done citation verification, not just citation formatting?
Can you check whether a source supports the actual sentence/paragraph where it's cited?
Which tools do you use — PubMed, Crossref, Google Scholar, DOI lookup, library databases?
Can you provide a spreadsheet audit trail?
Will you do a paid 10-citation sample first?
What would you do if a DOI resolves to a different article than the one listed in the bibliography?

    Budget

Paid sample: $100–$150 for 10 citations. Full targeted cleanup: $1,500–$2,000 depending on experience (up to $2,500 if claim-fit heavy).

  • Developmental editor - non fiction - law trials in India

    âś… RATE-CHART CONSISTENT

    Description

A work of 48,000 words on ten famous law trials in India needs:

    a) clarity in language without erasing the flabour of the writing
    b) straightening out convoluted sentences
    c) the narrative to be made more interesting on the basis of available facts to retain reader interest.

    From a knowledgeable critic:

The real challenge of the book seems to be consistency. The book needs
to sustain readers’ interest across chapters. It is then likely to appeal to not just readers who
appreciate law but also historical non-fiction. Readers know that each story will end poorly for
the protagonist. Therefore, the plot in each story should be balanced and contain more than just
legal proceedings. Briefer and simpler language will further ensure that readers remain
    interested throughout the book.

  • Developmental Editor - Psychological Horror/Thriller Novel

    âś… RATE-CHART CONSISTENT

    Description

I am seeking a developmental editor for a completed psychological horror/thriller novel of approximately 75,688 words.

The novel follows Mia, a woman who wakes in a mysterious psychiatric facility after a traumatic accident with no memory of who she is or how she arrived there. As she navigates the institution, she begins to question the reality around her, uncovering disturbing inconsistencies, missing time, and evidence that the facility may be manipulating patients' perceptions of reality. The story combines psychological horror, suspense, mystery, and speculative elements.

I am looking for an editor who can provide detailed feedback on:

    • Plot structure and pacing
    • Character development and emotional engagement
    • Tension, suspense, and horror elements
    • Dialogue and narrative flow
    • Repetitive scenes or passages that could be condensed
    • Overall manuscript organization and market readiness

Experience with psychological horror, suspense, thriller, speculative fiction, or dark psychological fiction is preferred. Experience working with debut novelists is a plus.

This is my first completed novel, and my goal is eventual publication. I am looking for a detailed editorial letter and manuscript notes rather than line-by-line copyediting at this stage.

Timeline is flexible, though I would like to begin the editing process within the next few months.

Please include information about your experience, rates, turnaround time, and whether you offer a sample edit or manuscript assessment.

The perfect person will have some knowledge, understanding and appreciation of Indigenous, Native American culture and might also specialize in sensitivity reading.

  • Developmental Editor — Literary Fiction Novel

    âś… RATE-CHART CONSISTENT

    Description

    Project Description:
I am seeking an experienced developmental editor for a completed literary fiction manuscript of approximately 68,000 words titled Scenes in Slumber.
The novel is set primarily in the early 1980s American South and follows Tres Lyons, a twenty-three-year-old married Spanish instructor at Auburn University whose encounter with a male student precipitates a years-long reckoning with his identity. The narrative moves from Alabama to Mexico to Nebraska to Spain before returning home. The novel incorporates formally distinct memory sequences — fragmented, present-tense childhood recollections — interwoven with the main past-tense narrative.
Comparable titles include James Baldwin's Giovanni's Room, Garth Greenwell's What Belongs to You, and André Aciman's Call Me by Your Name.
The manuscript has undergone significant structural revision and is in strong shape. I am seeking a developmental editor for a final editorial pass — an editorial letter identifying any remaining structural, character, or pacing issues before submission to literary agents.
    Ideal candidate has:
Experience editing literary fiction, preferably debut novels. Familiarity with or interest in LGBTQ literary fiction. Ability to deliver an editorial letter within six to eight weeks. Please include relevant credits and a sample edit of the attached first chapter.
Project timeline: Flexible but ideally completed by end of summer 2026.
Compensation: Open to discussion, commensurate with experience.

  • Ghostwriter or co-writer - education text book for university students

    🟡 NON-RATE-CHART CONSISTENT

    Description

Seeking a ghostwriter or co-writer can take that raw data and weave it into chapters for a transformative, engaging, interesting, provocative, education text book for university students.
I am a professor at a large African university. I have a massive "knowledge bank" from ChatGPT to help guide this project. I have a lot of notes , Chat GPT has tried to pull this all together but has failed and i do not have time to do the heavy lifting on this project. I have written many books. I need a ghostwriter or co-writer who can take that raw data, my notes, the Chat GPT output, and the knowledge bank and weave them into chapters. I will need to be sure the tone is engaging for students and pedagogical for teachers. The project will be fun and interesting. We will have cartoons, lots of sidebars, quotes, and practical stuff. I have many essay-length chapters/sidebars that can be organized into the book. A background in teaching and learning would be helpful, but the ability to organize while storytelling will be key. I will consider a co-writer/co-author relationship for the right person whose background will add value to the book. You should be familiar with Freire, Montessori, Dewey, and other transformational educators' work.

  • Line Editor / Ghostwriter to rewrite and condense children’s picture book

    🟡 NON-RATE-CHART CONSISTENT

    Description

I am launching a children's picture book project titled "Pip and the Long List," aimed at children ages 4–8. The book uses a kid-friendly allegory (a boy navigating a village while carrying a magically expanding scroll of rules) to introduce the structural concepts of recidivism, systemic red tape, and community accountability.

I have a complete 1,615-word structural draft that contains all the plot points, character arcs, and themes. However, it is too long and text-heavy for the current picture book market. I need a professional to take this raw manuscript and completely rewrite, condense, and polish it down to the industry standard.

    You will be responsible for:
    - Aggressively tightening the prose while keeping the emotional heart of the story.
    - Drafting rhythmic, repeating stanzas/catchphrases for characters that read beautifully.
    - Formatting the text into an intuitive page-by-page picture book layout (approx. 24–32 pages).
    - Delivering a submission-ready final draft for traditional publishers.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    - Experience explicitly writing or line-editing Children’s Picture Books.
    - Familiarity with traditional KidLit publishing standards (Scholastic, Chronicle, Penguin, etc.).
    - Passion for or experience with social impact, empathy-driven, or restorative justice themes.

Project Deadline: Flexible, but looking to kick off within the next month.
