With tremendous sorrow, the EFA Board of Governors announces that co-executive Ruth Mullen was killed in a tragic accident this week.

During her long tenure with the EFA, Ruth served as New York City chapter co-coordinator and has served on the Board since 2016, helping revise the bylaws, create an anti-harassment policy, and preserve our historical records. She also served on the Executive Committee, which oversees the organization’s budget; the Operations Committee, which is developing a continuity manual for Board members; and the Discussion List Committee. Ruth founded and chaired our Social Media Committee, coordinating the efforts of social media volunteers across our multiple platforms. Her most recent commitment to the EFA was as co-executive, to which position she was elected in June 2021.

Ruth always stressed the importance of connection and community and believed “we all share responsibility for creating a strong, vibrant, and inclusive organization.” Her commitment to the EFA and to freelance communicators everywhere cannot be replaced.

The EFA Board of Governors and staff extend our deepest sympathies to Ruth’s husband and two children, as well as to her extended family and friends.
