Catherine Dunn

I’m a UK-based editor, and I’ve been editing and proofreading since 2015. I work in both UK and US English equally (I’ve even been known to work in Canadian English!). My experience includes fiction and non-fiction. My genres of expertise are fantasy, science fiction, crime/thriller, horror, literary fiction, and YA. I also have experience with humour and romance.

My core specialisms are line editing and copyediting, but I like a varied workload, and I have training and experience in developmental editing and proofreading as well.

My bachelor’s degree is in Fine Art (Painting), and in non-fiction, I specialise in memoir, the arts, humanities, social sciences, lifestyle, and self-help.

I’m an Advanced Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (the UK industry body – www.ciep.uk).

I love working on things that are different or outside the norm. In particular, I’m comfortable with scenes that some other editors may find difficult, such as those depicting violence or that may be unpleasant or triggering in other ways. I really enjoy working with new authors, especially those who are little unsure – my aim is to support you and help your writing be the best it can be. If you have dyslexia or some other issue with getting your thoughts and ideas down, it’s my job to make that not a problem! I also have a thing for unconventional structures and unusual writing styles, so if this sounds like you, please get in touch!

My latest feedback from a client: “There is no doubt in my mind that you have the skill to develop a story line and take it somewhere that was not visible to the author. […] You’ve opened up a new world to me. I feel and sense you have gone over and above what an editor should do. […] Your style sheet is magnificent. I can’t praise you highly enough, you have held my hand throughout and I’ve always felt in safe hands.” –Fondley Palmer, self-published author of the novel FootNotes.
