Brooke Brannon

Brooke Brannon is a writer and editor with experience in journalism, cloud computing, fiction, and freelance marketing communications. Her goal as an editor is to clarify a writer’s voice and ideas so that they have maximum impact on the writer’s audience. Knowing that editing can be tough for writers, no matter how experienced they are, she prides herself on keeping the editing process positive so that writers feel upbeat and positive about their work rather than discouraged.

Experience: As a freelancer, she has written and edited articles, blog posts, newsletters, video scripts, presentations, and training materials for clients including SAP, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Concur, Financial Transmission Network, Inc. (FTNI), Point B Consulting, Tarkenton, and the Society for Information Management (SIM). She helps clients turn highly technical materials into compelling, readable stories that command an audience’s attention.

She has also provided beta reading services to novelists including Jennifer Crusie and Eileen Cook. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK with a final grade of Distinction, equivalent to summa cum laude in the US. Her short fiction has appeared in magazines including House of Gamut, Fantasy and Science Fiction, and Illustrated Worlds. Her work has also been nominated for the Pushcart Prize.

Brooke is well versed in the AP Style Guide and the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th Ed., the Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical Publications, and AWS corporate style.

Services offered: Brooke does developmental and line editing of both fiction and nonfiction, and offers discounts to emerging and BIPOC/LGBTQ+ authors. Rates are in line with the EFA’s standard rates. She offers manuscript evaluation, ghost writing, and nonfiction/corporate scriptwriting/editing as well.

She is particularly skilled at tightening prose that might otherwise overwhelm the reader, and actively enjoys rewriting content. Her philosophy is that the writing must serve the reader. Cutting away the extraneous–killing your darlings, in other words–results in clear, crisp writing that’s sure to hit the mark. Brooke can make that process productive rather than painful.
