Faith L Lagay

Faith L. Lagay, PhD, is co-founder and editor emerita of the American Medical Association’s Journal of Ethics. She was an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Illinois Chicago School of Public Health from 2015 through 2020.

Lagay began her writing and editing career as a master’s-prepared medical writer at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, where her skills helped physicians meet the demands for journal and textbook publication upon which their tenure and promotion depended.

Following that academic medical work, Lagay moved to the private sector where, as manager of corporate communication for an international energy company, she wrote and edited the annual report to stockholders, other stockholder communications and the internal employee newsletter. She also wrote and edited environmental impact statements and applications to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for project approval and expansion.

After 8 years of corporate life, Lagay returned to academics to pursue a doctorate in medical humanities at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Her PhD and editing background prepared her for the job at the AMA as editor of the monthly online Journal of Ethics for more than 15 years. During that time, she edited more than 2,000 academic articles, wrote more than 20 articles, and oversaw the application and receipt of the journal’s listing on PubMed, the largest index of science and medical periodicals in the nation.

Lagay retired from the AMA in 2015 and taught social and public health ethics to master’s students at the UIC School of Public Health until 2020.

In 2021-2022 Lagay edited a text on developmental trauma for Routledge Publishing Company’s Psychoanalysis in a New Key series.

She welcomes developmental and copying editing assignments in both science- and humanities-related pieces of any length, including text book chapters. She will provide samples of editing upon request for projects of interest.
