Deborah K. Steinberg

I work with writers at the developmental, substantive, and line editing stages of the writing process. I specialize in fiction and memoir, with a special interest in experimental writing, science fiction, speculative fiction, fantasy, hybrid works, writing that is part of a healing journey, and working with ESL writers. My editing and coaching services are individually tailored for each client.

I hold a B.A. in Creative Writing from Bard College, where I focused on postmodern and experimental literature, and an M.A. in English Literature from the Université Bordeaux—Montaigne, where my thesis explored the intersection of literature and medicine. I have eight years of experience as a teacher and tutor of English as a Second Language. I serve as Fiction Editor at Rivet: the Journal of Writing that Risks, and I am a founding editor at Red Bridge Press, both of which are dedicated to publishing experimental writing. I also facilitate writing workshops with a focus on healing, helping people tap into the deep reserves of wisdom we each hold inside. I believe that writing is a healing act, and that our stories have the power to heal others.

If your writing takes risks with form and content, if you are writing about a non-realist world, if you are dealing in allegory, if you are experimenting with non-traditional structures, if you worry that your manuscript is too weird for a mainstream editor to work with, I may be the editor for you! Much of my own published writing is speculative and/or experimental in some way.

If your writing addresses themes of trauma, loss, illness, or recovery, I approach your work with sensitivity, care, and compassion. My own writing frequently deals with these subjects, so I understand how important it is to have an editor you can trust to honor the courage it takes to write your story – or any story, for that matter.

I work with many writers for whom English is a second or third language, and I am passionate about working with writers from diverse cultural backgrounds.

I have worked with clients on memoirs, novels, non-fiction, poetry, and hybrid works. I love helping writers find the best words to bring their ideas and stories to life!
