Julia Kraus Phelps

I am a science-educated freelance copyeditor experienced in working with highly technical materials and with materials aimed at less technical audiences. My recent experience includes editing books on polymer and plastic materials, journal articles for the Astrophysical Journal  and the Journal of Applied Polymer Science, and supporting materials for college textbooks (instructor solutions manuals, online quiz system). I draw on my knowledge of Chicago, ACS, CSE, and house style guides. My training includes a copyediting certificate earned at UC-San Diego in September 2011. I have experience in meeting publishing deadlines and in working with ESL and translated materials. I enjoy being a part of the process of expanding and sharing humankind’s knowledge about the natural and engineered world.

Before I was a freelancer, I worked for more than ten years as an in-house editor, writer, web content manager, and archive librarian at a science and engineering research institute. There I edited a variety of science and engineering and business documents: proposals, journal articles, procedures, technical reports, patents, abstracts, resumes, training materials, web pages, feature articles, and marketing materials.

My science education includes courses in chemistry, physics, geology, geochemistry, materials science, and psychology, culminating in a B.S. in chemistry and geology and an M.S. in materials science.

I would be happy to hear from you and learn about your editing needs.
