Susan Matheson

My specialty is academic copyediting and developmental editing, especially in the areas of engineering, science, history, cultural studies, and psychology. Clients include faculty members at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, Rochester Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, and University of Washington. Publisher-clients include Princeton University Press, Johns Hopkins University Press, and RIT Press.

I enjoy working directly with professors, helping them organize their ideas and communicate them clearly and elegantly. I see myself as a partner with the faculty member to create high-quality writing that best serves the reader.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE
My educational background is in systems and industrial engineering, and I have experience editing a variety of engineering and science disciplines. I make academic writing understandable to the non-expert. I interact with authors in a professional way, writing clear, helpful, and respectful queries. In addition, I have extensive knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style, and I have worked with non-native English speakers, ensuring that their final manuscript reads smoothly and accurately.

WRITING PROJECTS
My own writing projects include a number science articles written for a general audience and published in the journalĀ Cell; two units for an introductory college biology curriculum; a World War II memoir written entirely from recorded stories of the author; and a book-length film study guide.

For an extensive list of my projects, see mathesonediting.com

EDUCATION
BS in Systems Engineering, University of Arizona, 1985
MS in Industrial Engineering, Rutgers University, 1988
