Let’s talk shop. Let’s talk story.

My name is Ariane Peveto, and with my sister, I am one half of Ground Crew Editorial, a twin-engine editorial firm that helps writers take off. Our mission is to help you get off the ground, whether that’s writing the first draft or the next draft, polishing a manuscript, querying agents or indie presses, or self-publishing. Words are my passion, and if you’re stopping by, I might not be too far off in guessing that you have a story to tell. Welcome, and feel free to pour yourself a cup of tea.

My Mission

When you work with me, the editorial feedback you receive is hand-tailored not only for your manuscript, but also your style, voice, and specific concerns and questions. That means that I provide you with critique that is useful and personalized to capture your vision. But my own goal is not to provide you with just a polished manuscript—it’s to support you as you grow and develop your craft for future stories or projects.

At Ground Crew, we’re all about excellence, exploration, craftsmanship, enthusiasm, and, most of all, taking time for what really matters.

My Services

As an editor, I specialize in all kinds of kid lit (picture books through YA) and adult science fiction and fantasy. I have experience in a wide variety of types of manuscripts and formats as well, including memoir, nonfiction, essays, and poetry. If you’d like to read the full description of what each of these services entails, please click or tap on the name of the service, and you’ll be taken to the service page.

Developmental Editing

A developmental edit is the most extensive and in-depth critique that you can get for your manuscript. This service includes:

  • An initial consultation call to discuss your goals for your manuscript, your writing history, and what kind of support you’re looking for with your writing.

  • A long editorial letter (15–20 pages) detailing the manuscript’s strengths and weaknesses and suggestions for improvement regarding character/plot development, story structure, etc. to help you take your manuscript to the next level as you revise. This letter also includes a story summary, a discussion of themes and strengths of the book, and recommendations for next steps in the process.

  • In-line reactions, comments, and questions in the manuscript itself using Track Changes.

  • A follow-up Zoom call (30 minutes) to discuss the edit and any questions.

Manuscript Assessment

You can think of a manuscript assessment as a developmental edit “lite,” designed to be a more affordable alternative to a full developmental edit. It is also sometimes called a manuscript evaluation. Whether you book an assessment or a developmental edit, you will receive the same depth and scope of critique on your work. The only difference is in the amount of feedback you receive. This service includes:

  • A close read-through of the full manuscript

  • An in-depth editorial letter (5–10 pages) of the overall impression and successfulness of the manuscript, including a tailored discussion of any specific concerns you might have.

Line Editing

Line editing is a step down from developmental editing, like a lens zooming in from the big picture to paragraph and sentence level. With this kind of editing, we focus on flow and clarity, with the priority being placed on enhancing the writer’s voice and elevating the story through strong writing. This service includes:

  • A marked-up manuscript with edits made using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature, allowing you to see exactly what has been revised and giving you the power to accept or reject any changes.

  • A 2-page editorial letter

  • A thorough style sheet that lists all of the unique names and terms in your manuscript to ensure that they are consistently rendered throughout the book.

  • Extensive line-level revisions that strengthen your writing and refine sentences to improve your manuscript and your writing skills.

  • A review pass for you to look over the edits and ask questions directly on the manuscript.

Copyediting

Copyediting is a close and thorough critique that delves into the mechanics of your work. In the process of editing, this kind of edit should ideally take place just before proofreading—that is, when the manuscript is just about finished and is just in need of a last polish. This service includes:

  • In-line corrections that bring your work to a professional and high quality standard using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes features, allowing you to see exactly what has been revised and giving you the power to accept or reject any changes.

  • A thorough style sheet that lists all of the unique names and terms in your manuscript to ensure that they are consistently rendered throughout the book.

  • A review pass for you to look over the edits and ask questions directly on the manuscript.

Quick Critiques

I offer critiques on your first 500 words or your first ten pages. For the ten-page critiques, a follow-up Zoom call to discuss the feedback is included. For both kinds of critique, you’ll receive 2 pages of feedback touching on the following categories:

  • positive aspects

  • elements for attention and improvement

  • character development

  • plot structure

  • langauge/diction

  • voice

  • next steps

Submission Packages

I also offer reviews on submission materials, including query or cover letters, synopses, and first ten pages. If needed, I can help you identify good comp titles and craft an author bio. A good letter and synopsis are created through a process of asking questions and making comments, so I include two rounds of revisions in this service. After you make changes, I will review them again and send you any remaining edits and comments.

A Little About Me

  • Bachelor’s Degree: English Literature
  • Master’s Degree: English with specialization in Creative Writing
  • Visiting Scholar: studied at Oxford University
  • Presenter and Faculty Speaker: Local SCBWI Connect and Critique meetings, RMC SCBWI Letters & Lines Conference 2022
  • 10+ years experience in editing fiction and nonfiction
  • 5+ years of university tutoring and teaching experience across the curriculum
  • Copyeditor for Japan Harvest (official print publication for Japan Evangelical Missionary Association)

I am a writer and editor who enjoys helping others bring their stories and ideas to life. I started out as a writing tutor and then taught courses in composition and rhetoric for college students. After making the very natural step from there to become an editor, I’ve had the privilege of working on a wide variety of projects, like one of NYT bestselling author Dave Asprey’s books and a text for Biola University—as well as dozens of independent clients with everything from picture books to memoir, young adult novels to adult sci-fi.

I am frequent presenter for SCBWI Rocky Mountain Chapter Connect events, and I was also a faculty speaker for the RMC’s Letters & Lines conference in 2022. My work has been published in several places, and I’ve received awards in short story and poetry from a local writers’ guild and was nominated for the Golden Pen Award at the RMC SCBWI 2020 fall conference.

Currently, I’m pursuing publication for my YA novels, The Words We Know and Love (contemporary fantasy) and Still Dreaming (sci-fi/fantasy blend).

Aside from writing and editing, I keep busy enough as a costume seamstress, baker, cake decorator, scrapbooker, artist, and paper aficionado.
