Ben Gambuzza

“Ben is one of the most gifted and tireless researchers I’ve had the privilege to work alongside.”

– Evelyn M. Duffy, Open Boat Editing

As an editor and researcher, I work closely with authors to develop and refine manuscripts, craft persuasive nonfiction book proposals, clean up clunky prose, and conduct meticulous, efficient, and exhaustive research online and in person. In 2021, I partnered with Evelyn Duffy and the team at Open Boat Editing on writing, editing, and long-term investigative research projects. The books I’ve worked on have, generally, fallen into the categories of American history, politics, journalism, international affairs, business, linguistics, art history, and science.

“Ben was exactly what I needed in an editor. He impressed me with his quick grasp of what I was trying to achieve, and his enthusiasm… He brought a humanist touch to the project that was refreshing and helpful.”

– Ethan Chorin, PhD, former diplomat to Libya, Benghazi! A New History of the Fiasco that Pushed America and its World to the Brink

I have done research, line editing, and proofreading for authors such as Carl Bernstein (Chasing History), AP Executive Editor Julie Pace and veteran White House reporter Darlene Superville (Jill), Syracuse law professor Lynn Greenky (When Freedom Speaks), National Book Award-winner Nathaniel Philbrick (Travels with George), and Bob Woodward (The Trump Tapes).

“Ben was great at finding an argument in a heap of observations and transforming clunky drafts into stylish prose. But best of all, he did this with the boundless, confidence-boosting enthusiasm that kept me grinding out those words.”

– Joanna Kempner, PhD, Associate Professor of Sociology, Rutgers University, Not Tonight: Migraine and the Politics of Gender and Health

I grew up in rural Massachusetts, where I developed a deep love of nature. I graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Trinity College, where I doubled-majored in English literature and music, and minored in classics. I also served as the editor in chief of the student newspaper, and on the editorial board for The Trinity Papers, the College’s annual academic publication. In 2020, I graduated from the Columbia Publishing Course.

I’m also a pianist and have performed across the Northeast, including at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. I host The Best Is Noise, a live weekly classical music show on Radio Free Brooklyn. And I’m a music journalist; my writing has appeared in The Village VoiceEarRelevant, and The Brooklyn Rail.

In research, there is nothing more exciting to me than chasing down a needle in a haystack, whether it’s buried in an online database, in a dusty basement archive, or deep in an interviewee’s memory. In editing, I’ve found that the author-editor relationship is enriching for both parties and absolutely essential for a successful book. A second pair of eyes, a thoughtful sounding board, and a cheerleader are what I’m proud to offer each and every one of my authors.
