Craig MacDonald

Living and working in Japan for more than twenty years, I specialize in academic prose. There is great importance—and considerable challenge—attached to English language for publication in international peer-reviewed journals. This is most often the concern when I handle the works of scholars and researchers seeking such publication. From experience gathered across my career as a teacher of English as a foreign language, I make my revisions with explicit and instructive commentary.

You will find that I am an effective and gentle problem-solver, ready to drive away errors and point out improvements in spelling, diction, grammar, and consistency. Researchers in humanities and social sciences can contact me directly when they need to complete their projects in orderly and timely fashion. I am ready to work for publishers as well.

I enjoy the varied reading experiences of the work I do across academic disciplines. I also admire each researcher’s effort when English is one of the last issues they need to resolve. Highlighting the author’s voice in each text, I provide careful and thoughtful revisions at every line if necessary, and I can check every paragraph for style. I also offer substantive editing, concerned with the structural and developmental aspects of scientific manuscripts and other texts.

The majority of my clients are researchers from across East Asia, Europe, and the UK. Their fields are in life sciences and social sciences, while my own academic background is in humanities and in the social science of education. Because my longest-running client (across fifteen years) is a botanist, I have become proficient in related scientific fields. And because my own publications have followed my graduate work in education (M.Ed., 2010), I am expertly familiar with MLA, APA and Chicago styles.

If you would like to know more about my work, I hope my website and the résumé (.pdf) below will show you the most important details. Contact me by email and I will be happy to discuss your project.
