Cynthia Freeman

In subjects ranging from physics and materials engineering to tire technology, technical copy editing is my specialty, with a wide experience base in peer-reviewed scientific publishing, including ESL. My freelance experience is varied, however, including grant writing, developmental editing, business brochures, resumes, and PhD theses. I am comfortable with light or heavy edits, in hard copy or electronic mediums.

I received my BA in English literature with honors from California State University, Long Beach. I started my technical editing career soon after in Princeton, New Jersey, with The Electrochemical Society (ECS), copyediting the Journal of The Electrochemical Society and Electrochemical Society Letters as their Assistant Director of Publications. I worked for them in-house for 3 years while my husband finished graduate work. In 1991 we moved to the Midwest and made our home in Iowa. A few years, two children, and a few freelance jobs later, ECS was in need of a copyeditor and contacted me to see if I was interested, a call which led to a 10-year stint working freelance for them. In early 2005 the Society made the decision to vendor out some of their publishing operations to the American Institute of Physics (AIP), so I joined their copyediting staff and continued to work on ECS journals for them, eventually branching out to other scientific journals, including Physical Review A, B, C, and Letters. After a reorganization at AIP, I now work freelance for them on various magazines, reports, newsletters, and other projects. Through Aptara Corporation and Begell House Publishing, I continue to work on science and engineering journals, including the Physical Review series. This, in addition to the occasional PhD thesis or independent project, keeps my copyediting queue full.

I value hard work, honesty, and integrity, qualities which pervade my personal and professional life, and am naturally a very detail-oriented person.

My husband and I call Iowa home, along with two of our four children and our Schnoodle, Marley.
