Cynthia Wolf

Wolf Wordsmithing

Cynthia Wolf is a veteran journalist who worked for a number of print and multimedia newsrooms between 1985 and 2012, starting with the Evansville Courier & Press in Indiana and culminating with Pioneer Press publications in northeastern Illinois in 2012.

The bulk of those years, between 1991 and early 2012, she was an award-winning beat reporter and feature writer as well as a community editor, columnist, planning editor and editorial board member at the Northwest Herald, based in Crystal Lake, Illinois. She departed the Northwest Herald in 2012 to pursue a freelancing career, but was drawn briefly back into the newsroom sphere as a news producer (aka managing editor) for several Pioneer Press mastheads later that year.

The work was challenging and interesting, and the colleagues top-notch. But the times were chaotic for that brand as it changed ownership and upper management, slashed middle management and expected its remaining, salaried news producers to absorb an exorbitant workload. The hours required to do the job justice became untenable.

Wolf decided her conviction of earlier that year to pursue a freelancing career had been the correct one. And she has been contentedly affirmed in that decision ever since, as it has opened the doors to an ever-increasing repertoire of skills and work opportunities.

As a freelancer, Wolf has completed editing, writing, marketing, public relations, editorial staff coaching and proofreading assignments for entities ranging from the Office of the Illinois Governor to the National Women’s Business Council — as well as for book authors, publishing houses, nonprofits and small businesses.

Putting her editorial skills to use to help others succeed and reach ever greater audiences with on-point messaging has been extraordinarily gratifying. She is excited to be a new member of the Editorial Freelancers Association, and looks forward to taking advantage of the resources it offers.
