Gery Deer

GLD Enterprises Communications, Ltd.

Gery L. Deer is an award-winning freelance journalist, copywriter, creative director, and the founder and creative director of GLD Enterprises Communications, Ltd., a strategic public relations and media production agency.

He grew up on his family farm in Jamestown, Ohio working livestock, participating in 4-H, and in his family’s agricultural trucking business. Gery got his start as a writer and editor with his college newspaper in 1987 but also worked on-campus jobs and as a pianist in area restaurants and nightclubs. In college, he first studied biochemistry (pre-med), but later went into mechanical engineering and computer science. His first few years after college were spent in technical fields as a computer analyst, database developer, and IT professional. That work offered him experience in a variety of fields including agriculture, construction, engineering, and 2 years as a researcher studying oil refinery operations in the U.S. and Canada.

Gery left the corporate world in 1998 to focus on a fledgling business, GLD Enterprises – which included on-site I.T. work, public relations, and copywriting services – a strange mix, to be sure. But he focused on his writing and followed his family’s tradition of entrepreneurship.

Today he is a leading expert in the areas of copywriting, creative development, public relations, and marketing. Since 2012 he has been a major business contributor to the WDTN-TV2 daytime program, Living Dayton, and served as Executive Director of the Western Ohio Writers Association, which he co-founded, for more than a decade.

Over 30+ years he has written for more than 300 publications, as well as countless private clients. Gery’s syndicated op-ed series, Deer in Headlines, was featured for ten years in a dozen publications around the country and earned the writer a 2010 nomination for a Pulitzer Prize in journalism. He discontinued the series in 2018 but just agreed to a reboot – aptly named Deer In Headlines II – in the regional AIM Media Midwest group in Greene County, Ohio.

As full as his schedule is, Gery does find time for some volunteer work. From 2016 until 2019, he served as chairperson of the Executive Council and Communications Committee of Prevent Blindness Ohio’s Miami Valley Ohio chapter and spent several years in various positions with the board of directors of the Yellow Springs, Ohio Chamber of Commerce. He is currently the president of The Green Team Chapter of Business Network International (BNI) in Dayton and was recently recognized by BNI Miami Valley Ohio Region for more than 21 years of outstanding networking achievements.

Many of his personal interests have led to career opportunities, among them music, writing, television and film production, and voiceover work. For fun, you can find him on his road bike as an endurance cyclist, performing with his family musical group, The Brothers & Co., or classic movie showings.
