Gregory William Black

G.W. Black Language Consulting

I am a former lawyer who was widely recognized by my colleagues as a superior writer and editor. I have been a full-time freelancer for five years, and have seen my business grow dramatically. The defining characteristic of my work is a high degree of clarity and precision.

My specialty is copyediting academic and legal texts. I have edited academic texts in theology, ecclesiology, history, philosophy, literary studies, international development, economics, sociology, and the classics. My legal editing experience includes work on various academic articles, including several in the general field of international law. I have specialized in helping nonanglophones who need to write in clear, precise English. My clients have ranged from PhD candidates to well-known senior professors.

I have also performed work for a number of editing services where I have worked with texts related to every imaginable field. I always understand that my substantive copyediting involves only suggestions — the author is always the boss and his or her voice must be preserved. Sometimes capturing that voice in the course of expressing complex concepts requires some back and forth of comments and responses.

My rates are in line with what is generally charged by substantive copyeditors.

I recently received this testimonial from an Italian professor: “Greg’s revisions are not only a correction of the English language. They are much more: an entrance into a culture, a decisive help for stating your concepts in the way that can reach an English-speaking audience. Manuscripts and papers become more clear and precise while acquiring a vividness of expression. Publishers I have dealt with have expressed to me a great appreciation for the high standards of Greg’s work. He cannot be compared to any other editor I have ever worked with.”
