Heather Fryer

Six years as the editor of Peace & Change: a Journal of Peace Research made me the author-centric manuscript evaluator, developmental editor, line editor, and writing coach that I am today. I have guided hundreds of authors from first draft to widely cited publication and have a deep appreciation for the uniqueness of every author and every work. My role is to bring out more of what the client wants the work to be. To that end, I generously invoke my well-honed skills at making setbacks into possibilities, spotting hidden gems of brilliance within the author’s too-familiar prose, and balancing rigor and meticulous attention to detail with a spirit of inventiveness and creativity.

As an author myself, I know the value of clear, honest, timely, constructive feedback that keeps the project’s momentum going. Two decades of vast and varied experiences as an author of books, essays, book reviews, texts for historical and fine art exhibitions, and public presentations has exposed me to all kinds of constructive and less constructive ways doing this. These observations have shaped the efficient, effective, and energizing approach to communication that works so well for my clients today.

I hold a PhD in history and have eighteen years’ experience teaching American Studies, writing for publication, and a host of other US history and culture courses.  My research areas include 20th century history, US society and culture, women and gender, race and ethincity, social movements, peace studies, the American West, Hawai`i, American literature, higher education, teaching, oral history, interdisciplinary humanities, visual culture, and public history.  As a graduate of the Institute of Life Coach Training, I also speak the language of coaching, positive psychology, and personal development.

I never get tired of witnessing the evolution of a work of writing and find great satisfaction in supporting writers in their process. If it seems my expertise and approach could be a match for your project, let’s talk! Please call or email to discuss the possibilities.
