Heather Fryer

Seven years as the editor of Peace & Change: a Journal of Peace Research made me the author-centric manuscript evaluator, developmental editor, line editor, and writing coach that I am today. I have guided hundreds of authors from first draft to widely cited publication and have a deep appreciation for the uniqueness of every author and every work. My role is to bring out more of what the client wants the work to be. To that end, I spot the hidden rays of brilliance within my authors’ too-familiar prose and transform setbacks into new possibilities–all while balancing rigor and meticulousness with a spirit of inventiveness and creativity.

As an author myself, I know the value of clear, honest, timely, constructive feedback that keeps a project moving forward. Two decades of vast and varied experiences as an author of books, essays, book reviews, texts for historical and fine art exhibitions, and public presentations has exposed me to all kinds of constructive and less-constructive ways of doing this. These observations have shaped the efficient, effective, and energizing approach to communication that works so well for my clients today.

I hold a PhD in history and have eighteen years’ experience teaching American Studies, writing for publication, and a host of other US history and culture courses. My areas of recognized expertise include 20th century history, US society and culture, women and gender, race and ethnicity, social movements, peace studies, the American West, Hawai`i, American literature, higher education, teaching, oral history, interdisciplinary humanities, visual culture, and public history.

As a board-certified life coach and graduate of the Institute of Life Coach Training, I speak the language of coaching, positive psychology, and personal development. Please visit Heather Fryer Coaching, Inc. for information about my coaching practice.

I have accompanied hundreds of authors from conceptualization to publication and delight in reading their work on the printed page. Let’s talk about adding your work to that number. Please call or email to explore the possibilities.
