Jessica Federle

Fiction & Nonfiction Editor

How can I help you? I’m a reliable editor with over a decade of experience in fiction and nonfiction.

On the technical and academic side, I’ve edited World Bank and USAID quarterly and annual reports on efforts to improve healthcare in Rwanda, Colombia, and Ukraine. I’ve proofread MDPI articles prior to their publication in peer-reviewed journals. I’ve helped clients improve speeches, government memos, and application materials. And before shifting to independent freelancing, under my own small business, I reviewed thousands of dissertations and theses by graduate students, training other new editors on how to work with documents at the masters and doctoral level.

I’m especially experienced in working with English as a second language (ESL) writers. I’m familiar with quantitative and qualitative research methods. I’m proficient in APA, AP, CMS (Chicago Manual of Style), Turabian, and ACS.

Do you need British or American English? What’s your citation style? I can help you make those decisions, if necessary, and I can edit accordingly. I’m happy to work with in-house style guides.

What’s the topic of your document? I’ve edited work on a wide range of subjects:

  • Governance and policy
Parking reform in Bangkok | Malaysia’s maritime defenses | LGBTQ rights and feminism in China | Mining policy in Indonesia
  • Education
Recent changes in higher education in Saudi Arabia | Efficacy of online learning (especially during the COVID-19 pandemic) | Impact of self-efficacy and motivation on learning success
  • Management, business, and marketing
Hotel industry in China | Corporate social responsibility | Quality control in supply chains
  • Medicine
Amputation recovery (including prosthesis fit) | Cancer treatment research | Traditional Chinese medicine | Mothers’ experiences of embodied pregnancy
  • Engineering
Random number generation | Tensegrity robots | Design modeling | Usability of the Tawakkalna app for COVID-19 management in Saudi Arabia
  • Law
Bias in professional witness testimony | Trademark dilution
  • Finance and accounting
Stock market analyses | Market reports
  • Film, art, and literature analyses

On the creative writing side, I have several publications. My short stories are in The Saturday Evening Post (Ranked #1 Most Popular New Fiction of 2019) and on The NoSleep Podcast. My poetry is in the highly respected The Threepenny Review as well as in Strange Horizons and Palette Poetry (forthcoming). I was selected as a mentee in the Rogue Mentor Program in 2021 and shortlisted in RevPit in 2023.

I work mainly with speculative fiction. My genre specialities are horror and science fiction. As an editor of creative writing, I’m a fierce supporter of my clients. Writing is a process. It’s a journey that takes courage and resilience. I want to be a sturdy stepping stone on your path to achieving your vision.

Other

  • I earned my MA in 19th-Century Romantic Poetry at the University of Bristol.
  • I’m originally from Kentucky, but I’ve lived in Peru for several years, so I speak Spanish and have a grasp on South American politics.
  • My sister is a heart transplant patient. If your writing relates to matters of the heart (literally), please let me know. I would especially love to support your work.
