Bright Owl Edits
Offers editing services–developmental editing, line editing, copyediting, proofreading, and manuscript evaluations–for authors, academics and professionals.
I am new to freelancing. So far, my fiction-writing clients have included romance (sweet/Christian, historic, and contemporary, so far), fantasy, literary fiction and suspense/thriller authors. I enjoy these genres, but I’m open to new challenges! Other genres that I enjoy reading for fun include speculative fiction, humor and mysteries, as well as non-fiction in the areas of History, Science, Nature, Gardening/Horticulture, Cooking, and Cultural Studies.
I’ve always been an avid reader, a collector of words, and a natural-born analyst. I have both a keen eye for detail and the dogged patience required to comb through long documents to find errors and inconsistencies. I strongly believe in honest, constructive feedback.
I hold a bachelor of Architectural Studies degree and worked for over ten years in the architectural design industry, specializing in lighting design. I regularly proofread and edited documents as a part of day-to-day office work, as well as informally, for friends and family. In 2021, at home with two young children, I decided to expand my skills, successfully achieving a certificate of satisfactory completion for General Proofreading: Theory and Practice. I decided to turn my love of language into a business. Bright Owl Edits is the result. I’m currently taking courses on developmental editing.
Based in Ottawa, Canada, I can navigate the quandaries of Canadian vs. American and UK English to help you to tailor your writing to your target audience. I work in English, but am also fluent in Canadian/Quebecois French, so if you’re translating a document from French to English, I can help you to ensure that your meaning comes across.
My chief standards of reference are the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th ed., the Canadian Oxford Dictionary, 2nd ed., Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th ed. (for requests of American spellings), Editors Canada, and your personal writing style.
