Joanna Mullins

Helping writers present findings, subjects of study, public information, and stories in ways that reflect their voice, retain precision, and engage readers continues to be my passion.

My clients for 33 years of independent line editing and copyediting have included university presses and scholarly religious publishers, academic journals and individual authors preparing for publication. I have worked extensively with material translated into English and with ESL authors, as well as reconciling UK and US English spellings and idioms. I occasionally also perform content or developmental editing. My style familiarity includes AMA (11th ed.), AP (56th ed.), APA Publication Manual (7th ed.), Chicago Manual of Style (17th ed.), and MLA.

I have also copyedited and proofread university online courses for edX/2U as a subcontractor, including course materials in Spanish, and I frequently edit websites, corporate reports, magazine news articles, user manuals, speeches, and similar projects.

For 11 years, until 2017, I wrote grant-related reports and grant proposals for a Philadelphia dance presenter and residency program, and I continued to work on the general administration and completion of filings for an additional 2 1/2 years. Of the more than 30 successful proposals I wrote, 6 were for large grants from the present Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.

Software and web competencies include Microsoft Office 365, Google Workspace, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Atlassian workflow software (especially Jira), several LMS platforms (especially CourseBuilder and Canvas), QuickBooks, WordPress and XHTML. I have some familiarity with CSS and have worked in GitHub. As I am a photographic enthusiast, I am very familiar with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.

My educational background is in 20th Century Literature & Critical Theory (MA, University of Sussex, UK) and in history (BA, University of Virginia).
