John Bialas

I’m a remote freelance copy editor and proofreader in Gulfport, Miss., and I have three years of experience working from home for Legacy Launch Pad Publishing in Los Angeles.

I’m also a writer who publishes a personal Substack blog called You Can Learn From Books, which is about reading, pop culture and other interests. I make sure the copy is clear and clean. It’s a good way to polish my skills as an editor.

Launch Pad is a great place and Anna David, the publisher and my mentor, gave me the chance to work with writers on memoirs, business books and self-help books. It was a new career for me, a former newspaper journalist with barely any knowledge of how to edit a book from start to finish.

Launch Pad helped me gain the confidence and expertise to join the Editorial Freelancers Association, which offers fresh opportunities to learn, grow and earn jobs in my field of nonfiction.

My abilities include fact-checking, grammar, spelling, style and punctuation. I’m an error detector. I catch stuff and correct it.

I provide feedback and suggestions for improving the overall flow and structure of a document.

I’m a meticulous and methodical editor in Microsoft Word, where I track changes before returning the document to the writer.

Email, phone calls, texts and Facebook messages are the ways I communicate with writers.

I rely on Associated Press style, though I’m open to using other guides.

If necessary, I will edit every day, (yes, even weekends) to guarantee the work is completed on time and to the client’s satisfaction.

I became a Launch Pad freelancer in 2020, three years after retiring as an award-winning page designer and copy editor at the Sun Herald in Biloxi, Miss.

Now I’m looking forward to seeing what I can do for writers through my EFA membership. In addition to books, I will edit newsletters, essays and blog posts.

Put this editor to work, please.
