John Ewing

I have over 20 years’ experience with national and international art magazines, newspapers, nonprofit organizations, museums, and businesses.

I’ve written for Modern Painters, ArtNexus, Tema Celeste, Sculpture Review, San Antonio Current, and other publications, with more than 150 reviews and articles published to date (finalist, Creative Capital/Andy Warhol Foundation’s Art Writers Grant Program, 2009). In 2015, I founded QueensBooks.NYC and have written, designed, and published three children’s picture books in print and digital formats (Dragon Boats in August: NYC through a Year of Celebrations won a 2017 iBooks Author Award, Best Book, Education).

Since 2000, I’ve operated a freelance writing and editing business in New York and Texas. Clients include the Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of the City of New York, Bette Midler’s New York Restoration Project, and numerous art galleries. Writing projects have included newsletters, annual reports, press releases, website content, and marketing materials.

As a freelance editor, I’ve worked with Yale Center for British Art, Museum of Contemporary Craft, Freedom House, Miko McGinty Inc., MASS MoCA, Bureau for Open Culture, Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard, Artpace San Antonio, Ballroom Marfa, and others, to prepare books and exhibition materials (editing essays, catalogues, artist bios, wall texts, and design PDFs). As copy editor of the Texas art journal Art Lies from 2003 to 2011, I prepared 30 issues of the former print quarterly, from editing texts in MS Word to proofreading layout.

This range of experience has given me considerable skill and expertise as a copy editor, particularly in the field of art. I’m meticulous, dependable, versatile, and fast. I interface smoothly with writers, artists, designers, and editorial teams to make projects hassle-free for everyone involved. I love my work.
