Karalee Surface

I am a part-time academic transitioning into freelance editing. Storytelling has long been at the heart of my work (from my decision to major in communications and film studies as an undergraduate at Purdue to my pursuit of a Ph.D. in history at Marquette). My graduate study focused primarily on American history with an emphasis on the social construction of disability. I have extensive experience with copyediting and developmental editing of academic works that range from student essays to multidisciplinary white papers on a wide range of topics about women.

Outside of academia, I am an avid reader of multiple genres, including historical fiction, nonfiction, memoir, biography, thriller, humor, romance, and YA. I also read a fair share of middle-grade and young reader books with my kids. In December 2022, I earned an Editing Certificate from the University of Chicago’s Graham School with a specialization in developmental editing for both fiction and nonfiction works.

I am excited to embark on this new journey and am open to helping authors from all genres polish their stories while retaining their distinctive authorial voice. Please reach out to talk about how I can best serve your project.
