I’m a writer, an educator, and a lover of language.

I’ve always done my best thinking with a pen in my hand. I’ve spent a lifetime looking at all kinds of writing and thinking about how to make it better, from when I was young as my natural orientation and for almost fifteen years as a teacher to university undergraduates, high school English students, adults with intellectual disabilities, and adult English language learners. I value clarity and honesty in language, whether the message is a personal story, a poem, a scholarly exposition, or that “lie in service of the truth” that is fiction.

I’m a deep listener.

I majored in music, and sound is my main medium for making sense of the world. My orientation is to listen to understand and to wait before responding. I can usually figure out what you’re trying to say, even if you’re not using quite the right words. I’m attuned to tone and patterns. I work with the understanding that words are resonant with meaning beyond their dictionary definitions, and choosing the right words matters.

I’m a right- and left-brained thinker.

Language reflects the interplay of order and irregularity at the heart of our universe, and the most compelling ideas and creative works combine solid logic and structure with symbolic thinking and nonlinear reasoning. I’ll listen for how to infuse your words with intellectual clarity and emotional force.

I am relentless about details.

Are all of those margins even? Is that a compound adjective? Did Tommy “scream for help” or “shout for help”? To hyphenate, or not to hyphenate? Should I adhere to conventions or break them as a stylistic choice? Are the diagonal strokes on that font too thick?

I’ll think about all of those things so you don’t have to.

I care about your success as though it were my own. Because it is.

I mean this not in the typical “happy clients are good for business” sense, even though that’s true. I believe our fates are all more interconnected than we often appreciate, and I believe in the power of clear language and communication as a tool of personal and interpersonal empowerment. I believe that everyone is intelligent and that we work and learn best in spaces of mutual trust and respect. Language is my strength and gift to offer as we all work toward better ways of being and relating in our world. I will strive to be the best ally you could have.

“Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. This is the interconnected structure of reality.”
