PROFILE

A communications specialist skilled in compiling complex technical reports, web copy, media management (traditional and social), event management, speech writing and public speaking.  Advertising and marketing management including copy writing and total campaign concepts.  Content editor and proofreader. Sound negotiating skills with wide experience working with other cultures as an Australian Foreign Service diplomat, as a volunteer with aid agencies and in ESL teaching positions and universities in various countries.

I have been fortunate to work in a very diverse range of roles in some of the most challenging areas of humanitarian support, including being involved in promoting women’s political rights in Africa and the Middle East; protecting and enhancing the environment and raising awareness of water, hygiene and sanitation issues in developing countries.

Current interests: global humanitarian and social justice issues; diversity; environment; cultures and languages enhanced through extensive travel, working in senior foreign affairs positions and living/working in nine countries.

EXPERTISE

Stakeholder engagement and cultural awareness

Engaging, negotiating and collaborating with people of differing cultures

  • Sensitive to political environments and cultural responses.

  • Keen eye for political trends, media moods and the fine details of potentially contentious issues

Examples

Creating communications strategies in Australian Federal and NSW government departments through effective negotiation as some of the ideas had been untried. For example, using funding generated by placed articles I had written for mainstream media about the former Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service for further projects. As it was a statutory authority, I was able to bypass the normal bureaucratic procedures on funding for departments and turned around former negative publicity about the agency.

As First Secretary Public Affairs, Australian Embassy, Brussels and Public Affairs Manager at the Australian Embassy, Budapest I worked with key stakeholders to negotiate, for example, the first Australian exhibition at the National Library of Luxembourg at no cost to the embassy and the first Australian exhibition (on the environment) at the European Parliament and Council of Europe, Strasbourg.

In Budapest I initiated the first conference of Australian embassies in Central and Eastern Europe to progress pooling resources and organised what was described as the best Australian film festival in Hungary by raising funds through sponsorship.  Successful management of cultural budgets in both embassies.

Journalism, media management, public relations, speech writing, public speaking, author

  • Successful writer for daily newspapers, business and lifestyle magazines. Including The Australian national newspaper and Australia’s The Saturday Paper, a national journal.
  • Management of domestic and international media through timely advice to Ambassadors, Ministers and Chief Executive Officers on effective strategies.
  • Well received speech writing for Ministers and Ambassadors. Public speaking to domestic and international audiences in Belgium and Hungary- often representing Ambassadors.
  • Apt management of national and international events.
  • Author of three non-fiction books including one on my experiences in Central and Eastern Europe and The Federated States of Micronesia. The third book, a companion to the last one, was published in Australia by com.au on May 30, 2022. See details http://lyndrummond.com/painters-philosophers-and-poets-sustain-a-seven-year-cycle/
