Type Eighteen Editing Services

I’m the owner of Type Eighteen Editing Services. I’m an author, writing teacher and coach, professor, workshop facilitator and speaker.

I’m the author of Things to See in Arizona (2023), a young adult novel, and the adult novels Starling, Bellflower, and The Qualities of Wood. I attended University of Denver (B.A., English) and DePaul University (M.A., English), and I’m currently an adjunct professor of writing and English at Concordia University, Irvine. I’m also the owner/publisher at Type Eighteen Books.

My short fiction has appeared in december magazine, Catapult, The Madison Review, The Write Launch, The Wisconsin Review, and other places. In addition to my own blog, where I write about the writing and reading life, I’ve published nonfiction in The Rumpus, Fiction Advocate, Author Magazine, LitChat, Shelf Pleasure and elsewhere.

I’m active in my local writing community and am President of the California Writers Club, Orange County branch. I regularly speak and teach workshops at conferences and events such as Southern California Writers Conference, South Bay Creative Writers Group, and others.

My general procedure would be to edit at all levels: copy and line editing but especially at the developmental/substantive level. I edit in Microsoft Word, using the Track Changes feature. Along with these notations, you will receive an editorial letter offering suggestions and guidance about characterization, plot, pacing, voice, point of view, setting, dialogue, and other considerations. Also included in your editing price is a 1/2 hour coaching session, via phone call or Zoom. Sometimes, it’s very helpful to go over the notes and provide further explanation, if needed. Additional, follow-up coaching sessions are available, and I also have experience with collaborative writing and may be interested in the right ghostwriting project.

I have experience in a wide range of fiction and non-fiction genres: literary, short stories, flash, women’s, book club, commercial, fantasy, historical, memoir, mystery, self-help, thriller, crime, middle grade, and young adult. If your work falls outside these classifications (or you’re not sure), try me! I’ve also successfully consulted with authors on branding, book proposals, query letters and more.
