Melissa Frain

I am a voracious reader and lover of books with over a decade of experience editing, copyediting, and proofreading for major NY publishers. I have taught writing at a variety of universities and writers’ conferences, including the Highlights Foundation, SCBWI, San Diego State University, and others.

For thirteen years I edited for Tor Books (a division of Macmillan). I joined the team in 2007 and had the opportunity to work on projects from amazing authors writing in all kinds of genres, from Douglas Preston to Orson Scott Card to Mercedes Lackey. As a senior editor I was instrumental in the building and expansion of the Tor Teen line, which grew to include many New York Times bestsellers. I focused on YA and genre fiction, with a list including a variety of bestselling and award-winning authors, among them Jennifer L. Armentrout, Kendare Blake, Rachel Caine, Cora Carmack, Sylvia Day, Gregg Hurwitz, Danielle L. Jensen, Carrie Jones, Veronica Rossi, and Kristen Simmons.

In the past ten years, I’ve also copyedited and proofread well over 100 novels, many of them romances, by authors including Lorelei James, Lexxie Couper, and Alyssa Day.

I have extensive editorial experience in a variety of genres, particularly most categories of young adult fiction as well as adult romance, women’s fiction, fantasy, science fiction, mysteries, and thrillers. Books I’ve edited have been:

New York Times, USA Today, and international bestsellers;

featured on NPR, Cosmopolitan, Buzzfeed, Huffington Post, and Entertainment Weekly;

winners of major awards including the Bram Stoker Award and the ITW Thriller Award;

Indie Next and Best of the Year selections in a variety of venues;

and selected for major reading lists (ALA’s Best Books for Young Adults, Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers, statewide school and library systems, etc).

I’m experienced editing commercial fiction of all kinds, with a particular focus on young adult, romance, and genre fiction.
