Michael Jauchen

I have over fifteen years of editorial experience, working with clients in a wide variety of fields and genres. I have a Ph.D. in English, and before moving into freelance editing full-time, I also taught college writing as a tenured professor at Colby-Sawyer College (NH) for eleven years.

I work with writers who are at every step of the composition process. Ive brainstormed book proposals and plot structures, offered developmental feedback on early drafts, line-edited for clarity and concision, and put the final touches on a manuscript with meticulous copy editing and proofreading. From the largest structural questions to the smallest grammatical details, I work with writers to discover what their manuscript is trying to do and how to get it there.

I have worked with academic clients from disciplines as diverse as political science, English, literature, film studies, history, cultural studies, the humanities, sociology, and even mechanical engineering. My book clients have published or are under contract with Princeton University Press, Bloomsbury, Belt Publishing, and West Virginia University Press. I also edit journal articles, conference papers, abstracts, and dissertations. Im deeply familiar with the forms and conventions of academic writing—I know how it works and Ive published peer-reviewed scholarship myself—and I can help translate your ideas into clear, accessible prose. Im fluent in the major style guides (CMOS, MLA, and APA), and I also have experience working with non-native English speakers who are looking to polish their prose.

My own professional training is in creative writing. I have published widely myself, and I also regularly collaborate with clients who are working on novels, memoirs, and short stories. Whether you’re working on a work of literary fiction, a riveting memoir, or planning out a mystery novel, I can offer knowledgeable, detailed feedback about ways to improve character development, plot, pacing, and structure.

If youre looking for broad suggestions about a manuscript thats just getting started or for a meticulous eye to put the final touches on a project to make it absolutely pristine, I can offer timely and personalized feedback to get you there.

Testimonials:

“Michael Jauchen is a superb editor, and I’m grateful for his work on two book projects. He not only transformed my writing into clean, polished copy, he also made suggestions for important structural improvements. He is a genuine pleasure to work with, and his way of communicating somehow makes you feel great about your writing even though the point is focusing on mistakes. Mike made my work better, and I’d recommend him for any type of project, large or small, and especially to anyone who hasn’t yet experienced what a difference it makes to be in the hands of a trustworthy and sympathetic editor.”
