PharandEditing

The difference between the almost right word and the right word
is the difference between the lightning-bug and the lightning. ~ Mark Twain

I’m a freelance copy editor and proofreader in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. I have a B.A. and an M.A. in English Literature and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature. Prior to full-time freelance editing, I taught literature, language, theatre, and drama at universities in Canada, the US, and Japan.

My clients include commercial publishers, academic presses, scholars and professors, college and university students, and fiction writers. I’ve copyedited monographs, scholarly editions, dissertations, theses, essays, memoirs, short stories, journal and magazine articles, funding proposals, media releases, advertising copy, screenplays, and newsletters. I’ve delved into bioethics and the philosophy of religion, and I now know something about Bedouin marriages, late Gothic asymmetrical diamond vaults in Spain, Internet use in Cuba, political activism in Russia, yak herding in Nepal, and the pit latrines of Malawi. Copyediting has certainly broadened my cultural horizons!

I offer three main services: copyediting, proofreading, and indexing. Once you tell me about the nature and scope of your project, I’ll give you a timeline and an hourly rate; or, if you prefer, we can discuss page rates or project fees. I’m punctilious and punctual: you won’t be disappointed.
