Rochelle Deans

I have more than ten years’ experience in academic, fiction, and non-fiction editing, as well as in formatting within Word.

With an uncanny eye for detail, I’m your go-to editor for manuscripts that need a finishing touch. I love finding small details that don’t quite make sense and brainstorming solutions, fixing timeline inconsistencies, and making sure you hook the reader with every sentence you write. In academic editing, this translates into ensuring each sentence points to the thesis statement with clarity, and there is no chance for misreading a phrase. I read for sentence flow and have an ear for rhythm and sentence variation. As an author myself, I understand what it takes to craft a manuscript with care, and specialize in what it takes to edit one into perfection.

In developmental editing and manuscript evaluations, I focus on plot, character arcs, and developing a cohesive theme.

I charge by the word for editing because I find it’s a win/win situation for both the authors I work with and me. Authors know up front what they’ll be paying, and I get to focus on the words in your manuscript rather than the time on my clock. I’m a collaborative editor who loves emails with authors discussing plot points and ways to make the manuscript shine.

My specialties include formatting and getting the kinks out of Word documents. I’ve focused on Turabian as a style guide, but have formatted to APA and MLA standards. My booklet “Advanced Features of Word: How to Easily Format Theses and Dissertations” was published by the Editorial Freelancers Association in 2018. In 2021, I gave two webinars on formatting features in Word.
